Stockton Liberal Democrats Demand Better Support for Local Police Service

28 Dec 2018

Cuts in police funding to the tune of 30% from central Tory government have led to fewer officers on the streets at a time of increased demand.

Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner, Barry Coppinger has put forward a consultation for local people to give their views on his plan to to raise money for policing locally. This would be achieved by increasing the amount raised from council tax which would see an increase of £24 per year for a band D property, just under 7p a day.

Stockton Liberal Democrats support this action to maintain the excellent work our police do to provide good quality public services to the residents of Stockton.

But we think more can be done to help fund our local services. We continue to ask that the council pressure the government to reverse damaging cuts (as supported by Cllr Julia Cherrett at the full Council meeting on 12th Dec) as well as supporting reform of local taxation to a fairer system based on land value which has been Lib Dem policy for many years.

The consultation is available athttps://www.cleveland.pcc.police.uk/Take-Part/Precept-2019-20-Public-Consultation.aspx

Local people, giving local views, on local issues.
