Stockton Liberal Democrat Candidates for General Election

20 Apr 2017

Stockton Liberal Democrats have today announced their candidates for the general election to be held on June 8th. Sarah Brown will be the candidate for Stockton North and Drew Durning will be the candidate for Stockton South.

Both candidates are strongly opposed to the Conservatives "Hard Brexit" approach to leaving the EU and will be fighting on a pro-EU manifesto that guarantees a referendum on the outcome of the Brexit negotiations. The manifesto will also call for improved funding for the NHS and Social Care based on an increase in general taxation and a legalised market for cannabis in the UK. The general election provides a chance for voters in Stockton to change the direction of the country.

Sarah Brown said "Voters in Stockton-on-Tees have the opportunity to vote for the Liberal Democrats to change the direction of the country and ensure Britain has a decent opposition. The Liberal Democrats provide the only hope of preventing a Conservative majority at this election. Every LibDem vote will give us greater authority to stand up to their isolationist right wing policies."

Drew Durning, who was also the Liberal Democrat candidate for Stockton South in 2010, said: "James Wharton is an ardent Brexiteer, who along with his Conservative colleagues is threatening to damage the UK economy by pulling us out of the single market and customs union. People in Stockton may have voted to leave the EU, but many did not vote for the extreme form of Brexit that Theresa May has imposed on us after being backed by Labour.

"The Liberal Democrats are the real opposition to the Conservative Brexit Government and the only party fighting for a Britain that is open, tolerant and united."
