Lib Dems deliver massive boost in apprenticeships for the North East

2 Jul 2011

After just one year in Government, the Lib Dems have delivered 100,000 extra apprenticeships across England to help young people get into work.

In the North East over 10,220 apprentices started last year, an increase of 73%.

This huge boost in apprenticeships is more than double the expected figure.

Together with the recent big fall in unemployment across the country, it shows that the Lib Dems are getting Britain working again.

Business Secretary Vince Cable commented, "The growth in apprenticeships demonstrates our commitment to delivering the skills businesses need to grow and young people need to build productive careers."

Local campaigner Maureen Rigg added, "Apprenticeships are an excellent way to help young people gain the skills and knowledge to start out on the job market.

"Thirteen years of Labour left youth unemployment at record levels. Thanks to the Lib Dems in Government there are now the biggest numbers of apprenticeships in our history - good news for both businesses and young people in the North East and Stockton."
