EARTH HOUR 2010
Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate, Jacquie Bell, took part in the WWF Earth Hour on 27th March 2010.
As part of the international recognition of the importance of climate change lights were turned off across the world between 8.30 and 9.30 pm. Action included turning off the floodlights on internationally known sites like the Acropolis, Sydney Opera House and the Pyramids.
Ordinary householders were encouraged to take part in the UK and Jacquie had her lights out during this time.
"Climate change is a challenge for us all" she noted. "Being in the dark for an hour last night was a simple way to demonstrate support for a reduction in our future carbon footprint."
Stockton Lib Dems were disappointed that the Tory Cabinet member for the Environment on Stockton Council rejected their calls for Stockton to mark Earth Hour in an appropriate way. Maureen Rigg noted, "Middlesbrough Council switched off the lights on the Transporter Bridge to show support but all over Stockton there were decorative lights blazing throughout the hour. Yet again the Tory green rhetoric isn't matched by action."
