a. Plans to restore Preston Park and Hall to its former Victorian glory are being drawn up. A draft development plan, including replanting the historic landscape of the park, creating better paths and signs to help visitors find their way around everything the park has to offer, an extended play area and improving the displays within the Hall, has been drawn up and now visitors to the park are being asked to give their views on what they would like to see. This month Stockton Council's magazine, Stockton News, will carry a centre-page pull-out asking visitors what they would like to see improved within Preston Park and Hall. The questionnaire can also be completed online at www.stockton.gov.uk http://www.stockton.gov.uk. There will be a public meeting on Thursday July 19 at 7pm at Preston Hall Museum where the proposals will be explained and where you can leave your feedback on the plans. Stockton Council hopes to attract Lottery funding and needs to show public interest and support. All views on the future development of Preston Park and Hall, including the questionnaire to be found in Stockton News, should be returned to Stockton Council by July 31 and should be sent free of charge to: FREEPOST NEWTOWN.
b. Nursery and reception class groups visiting the museum will soon be able to enjoy the tales of Thread Bear as he explains life in Victorian times. Written by Leaning Outreach and Access Worker Marian Jones and illustrated and edited by local artist Liz Million, the first Thread Bear tale centres on his search to get his clothes cleaned. The story encourages the children to compare their own life with Victorian Times. Marian has created a 'story sack' which includes a Thread Bear, pegs, carbolic soap, flat iron, a mop cap and a poss stick (a metal "plunger" used to work soapy water into a cleansing lather). As the story is told the children can hold and try out the items that Thread Bear is struggling to use. The Thread Bear story sack has been funded by the North East Museums Hub.
