Bye Bye ID Cards

Much to the joy of Stockton Liberal Democrats, the official end to ID cards has arrived. The House of Lords has now given Royal Assent to the Identity Documents Act. Long term campaigner against unwanted and expensive ID cards, local Councillor Suzanne Fletcher, is seen here taking the car sticker out of her car. She says " Thanks to Lib Dems in Governnment, we are saying Bye Bye to these unwanted and expensive ID cards, saving £835 million in planned future expenditure. I repeat - £835 million. What cuts would Labour have had to make to recoup that money ?"

Liberal Democrats locally and nationally have consistently campaigned against ID cards, a scheme introduced by the previous Labour Government.

All existing ID cards will be cancelled within one month, and the National Identity Register, the database which contains the biographic and biometric fingerprint data of card holders, will be destroyed within two months.

The Identity Card Scheme and other biometrics work has already cost the taxpayer £292 million. The Act has saved £835 million in planned future investment.
